NO-ELECTRICITY REFRIDGERATOR
Design Museum London 2016. Residency Application

Today’s technology creates commodity and objects that homogenise experience and behaviour. In an on-demand world of 24/7 consumption, products that force us to slow down and appreciate experiences are a rarity. The aim of this project is to explore traditional knowledges in a technology driven world, through food preservation and preparation devices. I strive to create kitchen objects that are fully adapted to the high quality needs of the modern user, simultaneously encouraging dedicated involvement instead of mere button interactions. Due to that, the user is enriched for a new experience and gets a deeper involvement with the process and knowledge of food preservation and preparation. Therefore I consider design devices that except from having all the modern convenience features, mainly stress the pleasure in food and the actual experience of ones actions.
The first device developed is an electricity-free refrigerator, an easily integrable  kitchen island that involves the user in “watering” the clay pots to keep the fridge cool. The user is directly becoming a part of the preservation process from which he appreciates an experience and creates new behaviour. The user learns through the object and the object works with help of the user.
